Utilizing data from the Wildland Fire Interagency Geospatial Services (WFIGS) Group and Integrated Reporting of Wildland Fire Information (IRWIN), the app displays thermal hotspot maps by region sourced from NASA MODIS and VIIRS satellite instruments. Users can view wildfire activities from the past 48 hours, including information on fire radiance power, brightness temperature, and confidence levels.
The app also features a Recent Wildfire News segment with updates sourced from over 1,700 cited sources, presented on a map or table view tagged by state alphabetically. Users can customize their state feed using the state toggles provided.
Access InciWeb & CAL FIRE active fire maps through direct links to the official incident webpages. Users can also track incidents related to fires in the past 3 hours via CHP (California Highway Patrol) data, along with general traffic incidents from the last 1 or 3 hours.
For detailed weather information in the USA, Canada, or Australia, users can view hyper-local conditions and forecasts through a map lookup or search feature integrated with NWS forecasts.
Information from the National Interagency Fire Center (NIFC) and more is available in the Wildfire Situation Reports section along with hourly air quality data maps from EPA AirNow displaying PM2.5, PM10, and Ozone readings color-coded according to the Air Quality Index.
A Map Measurement Tool is included in the Map Tools menu allowing users to measure distance and area, with an upcoming feature to save measurements locally and back them up as .xml files.
Premium users can access true color images with 250m resolution through NASA GIBS (Global Imagery Browse Service), dating back to Jan. 1, 2007, offering worldwide coverage. They can also utilize Google or Apple Maps directions through Universal Links to plan routes to any fire or hotspot.
The app includes a section featuring wildfire-related US government Twitter accounts sortable by approximate location or presented in a table view categorized into national and state sources.
An interesting aspect of the app is the User-Submitted Fire Map, allowing users to engage in map-based discussions on wildfire-related topics, with features for sharing photos anonymously without requiring an account.
The app aggregates information from various sources such as WFIGS, IRWIN, NIFC, NASA, InciWeb, CAL FIRE, CHP, NOAA, GOES/NESDIS, EPA, and NWS as soon as it becomes available. It's important to note that this app is not affiliated with any government agency.
